BDSM? Never Heard Of It. What Is That?

BDSM is an acronym for four words. Bondage, dominance, sadism and masochism. This is a sexual activity that many consider to be a subculture. And it’s not always viewed in a positive light. This doesn’t need to be the case when taking a look beneath the surface. The participants are always there willingly, and serious physical harm is absolutely out of the picture. This is a multifaceted world that is made up of people from all walks of life.

There are standard roles played by participants. These are typically dominant or dominatrix, domme for short, and the submissive, or sub. On the surface, the descriptions suggest aggression and humiliation. While true, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the roles are played for keeps. They are just that, roles. The dommes and subs are acting out their fantasies with each other, working towards a form of sexual release. A safe word is agreed upon before going forth into the play. If one or the other partner feels that things are going too far, the safe word is said to stop all activity immediately. BDSM is about pushing tolerances, not breaking limits.

A common image that comes with BDSM is of a man strung up while the female domme works him over with a whip. Whips are but one of the items that come into use during sexual activity. Again, their use is not to harm, but to enhance. A whip is used to strike short and quick. It can be a heavy thud or a light crack when it lands. The purpose is to leave a quick stinging sensation. Leaving a welt is absolutely out. Soft suede floggers are another popular item. Used on the bottom and back of the thighs, they sting without the worry of leaving a mark. It’s been said that having an ice cube or a feather drawn over the area after a whip has been applied is supposed to be exquisite.

This is but a small look into the BDSM world. It is a type of sexual play that gets dismissed out of hand by the unknowing. The reality is that it’s a highly enjoyable form of sexual expression.
